Yesterday we arrived home in Pieve di Cerreto to find the phone and dsl shut off (now we know what happens when an old bill goes unpaid for a couple cycles). And we met two new friends from the University in Florence who are working on restoring the +1000 year old church in our courtyard. Apparently this is the oldest church in the valley here, but it has been neglected by the “authorities” and is in dire need of repairs. They pointed out many dangerous places were the bricks could fall at any moment, bringing the whole thing down.

In the late 1800s a man named Barsanti undertook to do some repair work at his own expense. There is a list of people according to him who were now in Purgatory:

A very important feature of this church is the baptismal font — this was how the church could bring in money to support itself.
